Because I Want To

Adam’s fears of pairing are valid, but if he doesn’t get past them,
he’ll lose his best friend’s love forever.
Omega Adam and Alpha Matt have been best friends all their lives. Matt has been there for Adam from his first heat. They’ve never been apart and Adam has never considered being with another person. So, it confuses Matt when Adam refuses to allow Matt to bite and pair with him.
Adam has seen for himself what happens when an alpha leaves his paired omega, when his mother went through the excruciating pain of a new alpha bite. Knowing his best friend as well as he does, he knows that if Matt ever bit and paired with him, Matt would never leave and consign Adam to the pain of a new bite or a life without sex. But Adam knows that it wouldn’t matter how Matt felt, he’d stay even if he felt trapped by the situation, making them both miserable and hurting Matt badly.
When Adam finds himself pregnant with Matt’s baby, he panics. All his attempts to keep Matt from getting trapped have been useless. With no idea what to do, he ends up hurting Matt anyway. If he doesn’t come to terms soon with his fears, he could find himself completely alone and losing the only person he’s ever loved.

Matt chuckled at the text message from Adam, telling him not to come. Matt wouldn’t listen—hadn’t up until then—but Adam would try anyway. Matt didn’t quite understand Adam’s hesitation—after all the time they’d been together, Matt wasn’t sure he could leave Adam alone for his heat—but Adam tried, every time. Matt was also equally positive Adam didn’t really want to be left alone either. The hesitation Adam kept showing undoubtedly came from a misplaced sense of guilt for “making” Matt help him or something equally ludicrous.
Matt didn’t bother replying to the message. Instead, he shoved his phone into his pocket and headed to the employee room to collect his backpack.
His manager, Daniel, was in the corner, a cup of coffee in front of him at the break table. “Is it that time already?” Daniel asked, squinting down at his phone.
Matt chuckled. “Yeah. Maybe you should, you know, drink that coffee instead of letting it get cold. The caffeine might, you know, help.”
Daniel rolled his eyes. “Har, har. You’re so funny.” He shook his head. “Actually, I think this might be cup number… six? Or seven? I don’t know—I lost count. Any more than this and I think I reach nirvana.”
That brought a full laugh from Matt. “So… what you’re saying is—”
“It’s long since stopped working for me.” Daniel sighed. “Guess I gotta get back out there since you’re abandoning me.”
Matt was the one to roll his eyes this time. “Yes, because Tina, Michelle, and Mark aren’t enough to help you with the now-dead store.”
Daniel stuck his tongue out before downing his coffee.
“I always knew you were mature.” Matt laughed at the snort from Daniel. “Later.” He waved as he left the breakroom and made his way to the bus stop. A yawn much bigger than he would have liked escaped, but luckily for him, the bus turned the corner then. The bookstore had been way busier than he’d expected it to be, only slowing down as Matt was finishing his shift. Thankfully, only a moment later, Matt managed to flop into the seat and closed his eyes.
Barring a serious illness, Matt would never turn down an opportunity to have sex with Adam, but just then, he rather hoped Adam’s suppressants were working and he could get a few hours’ sleep before Adam would really need him. If Adam was worked up, sleep would wait, but as tired as Matt was, he hoped more for the sleep.
After getting off the bus and starting along the street, he contemplated stopping at his house for clothes and things. He doubted he’d really need them for anything—when he was at Adam’s place, they didn’t bother dressing much—so he decided to skip it and turned to Adam’s place instead.
