Spotlight: Secrets Of You by Skylar M. Cates

Please say hello to Skylar M. Cates and

Secrets Of You

Blurb:

It’s never easy to find redemption.

Carrying scars and regrets, River Darcourt avoids too much intimate contact. Among his friends, he is known as a quiet loner. Forget about love—it’s not something he will consider—until sweet, young, and tempting Morgan Hayes becomes his housemate. River closed his heart long ago, but the attraction is impossible to deny.

Morgan Hayes needs a change. He is moving out of his critical father’s home and in with his friends, including his secret/not-so-secret crush, River. Having feelings for River is a terrible idea. But what is a guy to do when the annoyingly sexy mechanic is just across the hall?

While Morgan has overcome ugliness and is ready for love, he’s just not sure River ever will be. They have both experienced pain in their lives. So Morgan dares River to take a chance, and love will either break their fractured hearts in more pieces or, just possibly, make them whole again.

Skylar here. Thanks for hosting me today! I’m excited to share some behind the scenes music from Secrets of You!

Some of these songs I listened to while writing the novel. Other songs were referred to in the novel itself. Finally, some of the songs listed here were from the editing phase.
Here are the songs with the links for your enjoyment.
Playlist for River and Morgan

Song: Damn I wish I was your lover
Artist: Sophie B. Hawkins

Who the song belongs to in the novel: Morgan
Morgan has a pretty mega-huge crush on River in the Happiness and Sunshine series that begins in previous books and comes to fruition here when he finally becomes River’s housemate. Pretty much this is what he’s thinking in the opening scenes.

Song: Somebody
Artist: Depeche Mode
Who the song is for in the novel: River

I love this song. It’s sad and emotional, yet hopeful. It’s what I think River wants and worries he won’t ever have.
Here are some lyrics
I want somebody who cares
For me passionately
With every thought and
With every breath
Someone who'll help me see things
In a different light

Song: Don’t Wait
Artist: Dashboard Confessional
Who the song belongs to in the novel: River and Morgan
The title says it all. The two of them are waiting for going after what they want: each other.

Song: Beneath Your Beautiful
Artist: Labrinth feat Emeli Sande
Who it is for in the novel: Morgan
As Morgan moves from a crush to deeper feelings for River, this song really sums up his growing emotions and what he wants to tell River
A few of the lyrics:
I know you're out of my league
But that won't scare me away oh no
You've carried on so long
You couldn't stop if you tried it
You've built your wall so high
That no one could climb it
But I'm gonna try
Would you let me see beneath your beautiful?

Artist: George Michael
Song: One More Try
Who the song belongs to in the novel: River
Partly this song made the list because George Michael passed away during my editing of the book (RIP) , and I was listening to many of his songs. This one particularly felt like one for River as he finally takes a chance on Morgan.

Lyrics:
I’ve had enough of danger
And people on the streets
I’m looking out for angels
Just trying to find some peace
Say you love me
But if you don’t
Just let me go

Song: My Hero
Artist: Foo Fighters
Who the song belongs to in the novel: Morgan
Without spoilers, there are many reasons that River is Morgan’s hero.
Some lyrics that fit the novel:
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary

Don't the best of them bleed it out
While the rest of them peter out?
Truth or consequence, say it aloud
Use that evidence, race it around

Song: Home Sweet Home
Artist: Motley Crue
Who the song belongs to in the novel: River
He has to go home to find home.

Song: Waiting for the Man
Artist: David Bowie
Who the song belongs to in the novel: Morgan
Another great artist who passed away while I was editing the novel. RIP Bowie. This song was one of my favorites to play at this time. And in the novel, Morgan was already a Bowie fan from the first draft of the book, so it seems fitting to be for him.

Song: Baby, Can I hold you?
Artist: Tracy Chapman
Who the song belongs to in the novel: River
Because River is sorry

Some Lyrics:
Baby can I hold you tonight
Maybe if I told you the right words
At the right time you'd be mine

Song: Open Arms
Artist: Journey
Who the song belongs to in the book: Morgan
I can’t say without some spoilers, but it will make sense when you read it!

Song: You make it real
Artist: James Morrison
Who the song belongs to in the novel: River and Morgan
I played this during some of the ending scenes in the book as they found that much deserved HEA!

Lyrics:
There's so much craziness surrounding me
There's so much going on it gets hard to breathe
All my faith has gone you bring it back to me
You make it real for me

….
And I'm running to you baby
You are the only one who save me
That's why I've been missing you lately
'Cause you make it real for me

Thanks for listening!
