Spell Fall
(The Warlock Brothers of Havenbridge Series, #4)
By Jacob Z. Flores

Blurb

Love and trust made them soul mates, but destiny might have other plans.

Ever since Drake Carpenter fell in love with warlock Mason Blackmoor, his life has been one supernatural battle after another, but Drake doesn’t mind… much. To be with Mason and experience the magical connection they share, Drake would face entire hordes of vampyren, shifters, or fae—and he has. Luckily Drake is immune to magic, though no one can explain his natural ability to negate almost any enchantment. With Drake’s own family gone, Mason is all he has. So why is Drake experiencing disturbing dreams about Mason that terrify him?

A new threat looms on the horizon, and a revelation about Drake’s identity and the true origin of his bond with Mason shatters everything Drake believes. If Drake, Mason, and all of magic are to survive the coming Spell Fall, the most destructive curse in sorcery, Drake must deal with the truth and fight his way back to Mason—because their enemies are gaining strength, and they intend to reach the boy Drake loves first.

Excerpt

A succession of loud bangs jolted me awake. I sat up, pulled open the nightstand drawer, and reached inside for the pistol I kept there for times such as these. When my hand didn’t close around the cool silver butt of the gun, I panicked. Where the hell was it?

“Fuuuuck!” Mason groaned in bed next to me. “Leave us alone.”

“Get your lazy asses out of bed. We’ve got shit to do.”

It was Pierce on the other side of the door, not—

Not who?

Mason sat up, flipped off the closed door, and burrowed back under the covers.

Pierce banged on the frame three more times. “I mean it. Get your asses downstairs in fifteen minutes or Dad’ll be the one coming up here to get you.”

Crap. We definitely didn’t want that. Mr. Blackmoor didn’t tolerate tardiness. He’d transform his body into stone and turn the bedroom door into splinters. “We’ll be right down.”

Pierce grunted before his footsteps padded back downstairs.

I nudged Mason with my foot. “Wake up.”

“Can’t. Tired. Need sleep.”

What I needed was answers. There was definitely more to that dream from last night.

“Mason, please. We need to talk.”

A low snore was my only reply.

“Something’s wrong.”

He sat up as if he were a jack-in-the-box. Even though his eyes were still half-closed and his black hair resembled a rat’s nest, the hum of his shadow powers filled the room. “Who is it? What is it? Tell me where to shoot.”

I sighed before placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “Jeez. Power down before you blast me.” The hateful gaze of the Mason in my dream filled my memory. I shook the image from my mind and took several deep breaths.

“Did you have that dream again?”

“I don’t think it was a dream.”

He scrunched up his lips and glanced sideways at me. “Then what the hell was it?”

That was the million-dollar question.

What’s Happened So Far on the Warlock Brothers of Havenbridge?

Hi, everyone! I’m Jacob Z. Flores, and I’m thrilled to be here promoting Spell Fall, the fourth book in my Warlock Brothers of Havenbridge series. These books follow the lives of three magical brothers, Mason, Thad, and Pierce, who have unearthed a dark conspiracy that threatens more than the world but magic itself.

Obviously, the Blackmoor warlocks aren’t the only characters in the story. In fact, the cast has grown quite a bit since the first book, so to help orient new and returning readers to the fictional world I created, I thought it would be fun to give everyone a quick recap, without giving away too many spoilers, of what’s happened so far.

The Cast

Pierce Blackmoor is the oldest of his siblings and the future high priest of his coven, a duty he now takes seriously. After suffering through a brief period where his brothers possessed more power than he did, Pierce’s command over lightning has evolved. He can now see energy auras and transform his body into living lightning.

Thad Blackmoor is the middle child. He is coolly logical and often aloof. He uses his ice abilities to strategic advantage. His powers have grown as well. He can now create snow storms and call forth a blizzard. He was also able to briefly tap into fae magic, a feat never managed before. Knowledge is far more important to Thad than defeating his enemies.

Mason Blackmoor is the youngest of his siblings, who initially had trouble controlling his magic or accessing his active power. Mason has since learned he is a shadow weaver, which means he can bend the darkness to his will. This is a rare and powerful warlock ability that has led to the corruption of every warlock who has ever wielded it.

Drake Carpenter, human boyfriend of Mason, has been made an honorary member of the Blackmoor coven. His last surviving relative, Aunt Millie, was murdered by a vampyre. He is under the protection of the Blackmoors because: he killed the vampyre that murdered his aunt and he is immune to magic. This has made him invaluable against vengeful shadow weavers and psychotic sorcerers.

Aiden Teine joined the Blackmoor family after being cast out of Otherworld, the land of the fairies when he was turned into the first vampyre fae. As a fire fae and former prince of his realm, Aiden struggles with balancing his conflicting fae and vampyren tendencies. His love for Thad continues to keep his more dangerous instincts at bay.

Kale Aquilo is a shifter and the most recent addition to the Blackmoor family. When he first arrived from the shifters’ magically shrouded island, Aeaea, Kale was timid and docile like the dove he turned into. His love for Pierce and the devastation brought to his home by shadow weaver Ben Crane and the mad sorcerer Sersie gave Kale the ability to transform into an eagle. Kale now serves as the Chief Advisor to the Beast King and as a liaison between his people and the rest of the magical community.

Oliver Blackmoor is the head of his family and the high priest of his coven. Although many still consider him the most powerful warlock in the family, since he turns his entire body to stone, his sons’ growing magical abilities have begun to eclipse his own. He is often distant and irritable, but Oliver loves his sons and his ever-growing family. He also still grieves for his wife, Priscilla, who died from breast cancer one year ago.

The Conclave is the governing body of the magical community. The three most powerful warlocks, witches, and wizards serve on the Conclave. They are charged with making and enforcing magical laws as well as ensuring the Gate, the source of all magic, is protected from all threats. The word of the Conclave is absolute, and their power is feared across the magical community. Currently, the Conclave and the Blackmoors are at odds.

Gerald Wa, a wizard and the only identified member of the Conclave, acts as an advisor to the protector covens. He was believed to be dead, but his death was staged to hide his ascension to the Conclave. Prior to this “death,” Gerald was romantically involved with Drake’s aunt Millie. The information Gerald provides to the protector covens and more specifically to the Blackmoors used to place him at odds with the rest of the governing body. However, Gerald and the Blackmoors have had a falling out, and the current nature of their relationship is unknown.

The Warlock Hag is a member of the Conclave. Although her identity is unknown, she has made her dislike of the Blackmoors evident. Her animosity toward the Blackmoors places her and Gerald at odds, especially since she wants to replace the Blackmoors with the Edwells as the protector coven for the Order of the Black.

Ebenezer Kane/Ben Crane came back to life as a vampyre after his father spoke the immortalitas spell. Ebenezer created other vampyren and almost destroyed the magical and human communities. It took the combined might of the Conclave to stop him. During the present day, Ebenezer took on the identity of Ben Crane and decimated Otherworld, the land of the fae, and Aeaea, the shifters’ magical island. He stole two of the Crests of the Five, which are physical manifestations of the five mystical elements, for someone identified as Ica, the individual truly pulling the strings. Pierce killed Ben during his attempt to steal the third crest within the crown of the Beast King.

Ica is the unknown enemy the Blackmoors have been fighting. His true name and the motives behind his pursuit of the Crests of the Five remain a mystery to all except the Conclave.

And that is where Spell Fall picks up as Drake assumes the role of narrator for the fourth book. As you can see, a lot has happened, and it’s only the beginning. I hope you’ll join me on this journey to find out what happens next!

About The Author

Jacob Z. Flores lives a double life. During the day, he is a respected college English professor and mid-level administrator. At night and during his summer vacation, he loosens the tie and tosses aside the trendy sports coat to write man on man fiction, where the hard ass assessor of freshmen level composition turns his attention to the firm posteriors and other rigid appendages of the characters in his fictional world.

Summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, provide Jacob with inspiration for his fiction. The abundance of barely clothed man flesh and daily debauchery stimulates his personal muse.
When he isn’t stroking the keyboard, Jacob spends time with his daughter. They both represent a bright blue blip in an otherwise predominantly red swath in south Texas.

  5. WOW! Now, I can imagine the cast in full details. <3

Pierce looks like Henry Cavill to me. Mason looks Robert Sheehan. Oliver oddly looks like Robert Downey Jr. And Ben resembles Zachary Quinto very much! :D When you can finally put faces on those faceless characters. =)

And regarding the excerpt, it looks like Drake is in great trouble. :|

Thanks for coming by to My Fiction Nook, Mr. Jacob! <3

    1. Thanks, James! You are spot on about most of my character inspiration. Mason was actually fashioned after Ian Sommerholder (sp?) and Gerard Butler was the inspiration for Oliver, but you were pretty close!
