ARC Review: Not a Game by Cardeno C.

Blurb:
An accidental meeting and a misunderstanding lead to a life-altering connection.

A new job, a new city, and hopefully a new life. When chubby gamer Oliver Barnaby receives a job offer from the best boutique game developer in the country, he leaves his family and his less than spectacular existence in Oklahoma without a second’s hesitation. Determined to change more than his career and his geography, Oliver implements a plan to finally land a boyfriend. Step one is improving his skills in the bedroom.

A life that looks perfect on paper, but feels empty in reality. Attractive, successful, charismatic Jaime Snow has a life other people envy. His already booming business is growing. He isn’t lacking in friends. And he has no trouble finding a date. But there’s an emptiness in Jaime’s heart and a hole in his life that only the right man can fill.

An accidental meeting, a misunderstanding, and falling in love. When Oliver and Jaime end up at the same bar at the same time, they each see something they want in the other. Going to bed together that first night is easy. Building the lifetime relationship they both desperately crave will require trust, time, and a little misunderstanding.

Dani's rating:

This is my favorite CC book since Perfect Imperfections. Not a Game is fluffier than an angora sweater and sweeter than key lime pie.

Highlights:

- one Oliver (geeky, chubby game designer who’s hopelessly insecure)

- one Jaime (sexy, successful, and willing to teach Oliver everything he knows about giving and receiving pleasure)

- AGE GAP (Jaime is 40 to Oliver’s 28; I do love me the silver foxes)

- a “twist” that’s obvious almost immediately to the reader, but not to Oliver (it doesn’t matter that we see the twist coming; this is a romance novel, not a mystery, and the twist keeps the spark in the story)

- not one but THREE little dogs

- steam & sexual exploration aplenty (Oliver is an almost virgin and wants to try it all with Jaime, who’s a very patient teacher)

- Shout-from-the-rooftops kind of HEA

One of my very favorite things about this story is that Oliver is not your typical MC. He tops 290 pounds at 6’2”. Jaime happens to be attracted to husky men and loves Oliver’s body, but Oliver has a hard time believing Jaime's sincerity.

I was prepared for Oliver to lose weight and then, all svelte and gorgeous, get his HEA, but that’s not what happened! This was such a refreshing take on the typical romance novel.

There was potential for relationship drama, but faced with Jaime's confession, Oliver reacts like a mature adult instead of throwing a hissy fit.
Can I get a hallelujah?

I adored Oliver’s amiable, shy personality and his willingness to put himself out there for Jaime. And Jaime is a dream: caring and thoughtful, and completely crazy about Oliver.

These two are so RIGHT for one another, I had a huge grin on my face the entire time I was reading this book.

If you’re looking for a dose of SWEET & SEXY, don’t miss this story!
