Blogtour: Chasing Sunrise by Lex Chase

ChasingSunrise_FBbanner_DSPP

Heya and howdy do! I'm Lex Chase and I want to give a big thank you to Sandra for hosting me today on the Chasing Sunrise Blog Tour

Chasing Sunrise is a high fantasy horror featuring not your Momma's paranormal. We have our heroes the cannibalistic aisa, Ancient Roman shifters, torture, war, genocide, and a love story that causes irrevocable consequences. It's dark, intense, and we learn nothing is really as simple as black and white. People are complicated, and love makes it worse.

Speaking of complicated people, I'd like to give a shout out to the supporting cast who also play a major role in the series. They are the King's Royal Guard, a sisterhood known as the Armigers. Save a few other males I can count on one hand and have fingers left over, the entire supporting cast are women. It is always a concern how female characters are seen in M/M, but in the case of the Armigers... They're flippin' amazing.

The captain of the Armigers, Bianca, and her second-in-command, Chaney, are a pair very dear to me. They're a devoted lesbian couple that have a story just as epic as Sevon and Jack. In Chasing Sunrise we only get brief glimpses of their love for each other, but in those glimpses I wanted to express that they have a love extends beyond time itself. They have such a deep love for each other that Sevon can only dream of one day reaching with Jack. But there's a twist with Bianca and Chaney. We learn through the Darkmore Saga is there is a concept of a Chrono and an awakened. A Chrono, like the Roman god of time Chronos, is a giver of time that makes an awakened immortal, or... have all the time in the world as it were.

In Chasing Sunrise we discover that for a Chrono and awakened to have a romantic relationship, it's a punishable criminal offense. While centuries have passed, many are still quite close-minded to such a relationship. To earn Sevon's trust, Bianca confesses to Sevon that Chaney is her Chrono and they are indeed lovers. Sevon, who is gay, at first finds this news absolutely scandalous and uncomfortable. I enjoy the play of taking the "scandal" of a gay relationship, and twisting it into something else. Something else that readers of LGBT fiction would find familiar but unusual. We have read countless stories of gay relationships facing trials and dangers if they can truly remain together, and we're aware it's going to all be okay in the end. But what about a trope where being gay isn't the issue at all, but a certain social standing? Or a certain race of people? Or in the case of the Darkmore Saga, certain species of shifters and immortals having relations with mortals (which is a whole other ball of wax.) And it's something where readers are not exactly truly sure if it's going to work out for the best like they're so comfortable in the standard LGBT relationship story. Essentially, Bianca and Chaney serve as my own poster children for civil rights in the context of this series. And I hope M/M readers appreciate and want to learn more about their love story as well as Sevon and Jack. Because these ladies have weathered the storms of their relationship and they have become so diesel, they can and will rise to the occasion.

My question to you! Who are some of your favorite supporting characters? What book was it? I'm taking suggestions for my TBR pile!

Blurb:

The once glorious aisa kingdom of Darkmore lies in ruins, and King Sevon Marat√© is trapped. Sevon endures unrelenting abuse and is used as a scapegoat by Lord Dominic Ravensgrove, who rules Darkmore from the shadows. Coping by dressing in gowns and jewels, the effeminate king relishes the scraps of freedom he is given to be himself. As a verkolai, Sevon possesses the ability to part the Veil separating his world from hundreds of others. His gift provides a chance for escape, but Dominic refuses to relinquish his tool for power. When Dominic forges an ambitious plan to invade the prosperous shifter land of Priagust, he manipulates Sevon’s desperation for his people’s survival. Out of options, Sevon has no choice but to cooperate. On their foray into Priagust, Dominic's men abduct a shifter named Jack. Despite being tortured for information, Jack's loyalty to his kind never wavers. But Jack’s knowledge about Darkmore’s history unsettles Sevon, and a curious bond begins to form. Despite Sevon’s mistrust, Jack is determined to tame the beautiful king’s wild heart and perhaps earn his freedom. As war looms, Sevon fears Jack’s kindness is another trap. Conflicted, Sevon wonders if he should risk chasing the sunrise or remain Dominic's compliant prisoner.

About the Author: Lex Chase once heard Stephen King say in a commercial, “We’re all going to die, I’m just trying to make it a little more interesting.” Now, she’s on a mission to make the world a hell of a lot more interesting. Weaving tales of cinematic, sweeping adventure—and depending on how she feels that day—Lex sprinkles in high-speed chases, shower scenes, and more explosions than a Hollywood blockbuster. Her pride is in telling stories of men who kiss as much as they kick ass. If you’re going to march into the depths of hell, it better be beside the one you love. Lex is a pop culture diva, her DVR is constantly backlogged, and unapologetically loved the ending of Lost. She wouldn’t last five minutes without technology in the event of the apocalypse and has nightmares about refusing to leave her cats behind.
