Blogtour: A Solitary Man by Shira Anthony and Aisling Mancy - Shira Edition

An introduction to

A Solitary Man

by Aisling Mancy and Shira Anthony

Thank you, Sandra and company, for hosting the A Solitary Man book tour today! I’m so excited to share a little bit about the process of creating the book. Be sure to scroll down to the end for a chance to enter the blog tour giveaway. Aisling and I put together a fun prize package for readers that includes signed paperback books from each of each.

A Solitary Man was a truly a labor of love, and touches on issues important to both me and Aisling. As a joint project, each of us focused on one of the two main characters in the story. Aisling on Xav Constantine, the ex-FBI agent who finds himself in coastal North Carolina on the trail of child sex traffickers, while I focused on C. Evan “Chance” Fairchild, the assistant DA who is struggling to get drugs off the street before they destroy the city he loves.

Writing Chance posed some real challenges, not the least of which was getting inside the head of a man who had spent months in solitary confinement as a young teen. The ramifications of Chance’s past remain with him, in spite of his outward success. The scars of that past run deep, and the wall Chance erects around his heart is nearly impenetrable.

As a child, Chance protected himself in part with his anger. Pushed beyond his limits and afraid, he strikes back. The consequences of Chance’s rage are dire. With the help of a good therapist, Chance begins to cope with the fear and the anger. With her help, Chance goes to college and later, law school.

As an adult, Chance still struggles to control his anger. But Chance’s anger masks something even deeper: fear. Fear of being hurt. Fear of what might happen if he allows himself to be vulnerable. Chance’s fear is a palpable thing and a theme that runs through the book. In order to move on and grow as a man—and find love—Chance must learn to face his fear. Xav helps him do that.
Chance has several ways of releasing the tension that comes with powerful emotions, the most obvious of which is his use of a breathing technique. It’s actually one I learned about in a continuing legal education class I attended, and it’s very effective. Here’s an example, near the beginning of the story, when Chance uses this technique after his boss blows him off once again:

Evan sat in the parking lot of the bar, fingers clenched around the steering wheel. Faison had pushed him to his limits. It pissed him off beyond reason how the man blew off the important stuff and focused only on what would help move his political career forward. Evan had never liked politicians. Even the DA before Faison, who now had a seat in the state senate, hadn’t been anything to write home about, but at least he hadn’t made Evan want to scream in frustration. With Faison, Evan felt he was spinning his wheels, where before he’d at least made progress toward cracking down on drug suppliers. Too many people—kids in particular—were falling victim to the drugs they should have taken off the street. Evan hated that, and he’d come to hate Faison for doing so little about it. Worse still, Faison had done nothing at all to make a dent in the problem but wasted no time distorting facts in order to spin things for his next campaign. Hypocrisy at its finest.
Breathe. Normally Evan let Faison’s bullshit roll off his back. But when Faison blew off the things that were important to Evan, the frustration he’d felt as a child and the accompanying rage came roaring back. Faison didn’t give a crap about illegal drugs, but those drugs had nearly destroyed Evan’s life. He inhaled for four counts, held his breath for four, and exhaled for four counts. His heart slowed and tension began to leave his body—one of many useful things Evelene had taught him when he was a kid. The other thing that worked for him when he felt as though he might spontaneously erupt into flames?

I think you can guess the other way Chance blows off steam. Chance’s one night stand with Xav changes both of their lives in ways they couldn’t have even imagined. With Xav’s help, Chance learns to trust again. And Xav? He finds the loving heart Chance had hidden away. –Shira

Sparks fly when Chance meets tall, sexy Xav at a Wilmington bar and they have the hottest one-nighter of their lives. But Chance doesn’t do repeats, Xav seems detached, and they go their separate ways without a word. Later, when closeted Assistant District Attorney C. Evan “Chance” Fairchild meets Dare's Landing’s newest deputy sheriff, Xavier “Xav” Constantine, Evan isn’t only wary. He’s irritated as hell.

Xavier is a former FBI agent turned deputy sheriff who is hot on the trail of a South American child prostitution ring. Evan is fighting to put an end to rampant cocaine trafficking and chafing under the thumb of an election-hungry boss. When someone tries to kill the eleven-year-old witness who holds the key to both their investigations, they’re forced to work together as they put their lives on the line to protect him. As Chance and Xav collide in the heat of a sweltering North Carolina summer, dodging bullets and chasing bad guys isn’t the only action going on.
