ARC Review: A Gentle Kind of Strength by Kendall McKenna

A police K9 handler believes he's lucky when a romance starts with the local veterinarian, but then his canine partner is injured in the line of duty.

Sergeant Ray Lerner is a veteran sheriff's department K9 handler. Damien Federov is the veterinarian caring for Harley รข€“ Ray's canine partner. When taking a man as a lover, Ray's always been confident. Around Damien, Ray becomes uncharacteristically shy and tongue-tied. When Damien begins their romance, Ray knows he's lucky.

His obsession with a past tragedy blinds Ray to everything he has with Damien. When Harley is injured on duty, his life is in Damien's hands. As Ray sits vigil, he has one final chance to allow Damien in all the way, or risk losing everything important, in a single night.

Dani's rating:

The first 30 percent of this book is serious UST ... intense, no holds barred.

Sergeant Ray Lerner, former Marine and current police K9 handler, has had a crush on his dog Harley's veterinarian, Damien, for a more than a year. But Ray is unwilling to put himself out there and slow on the emotional uptake, so even as we see Damien's sweet attempts at flirting, Ray is still wondering if the man is gay.

When the men finally figure it out ... well, it's like a lighting strike.

There are two sexy scenes in this story, which doesn't seem like a lot, but QUALITY over quantity, people.

Lordy, but Ray and Damien burn up the sheets: erotic, tender, passionate, explicit perfection! XXX. Just the way I like it!

There is no relationship angst here; the tension comes when Harley the dog is injured on the job, and Damien is the only one Ray trusts to save Harley.

I do wish the story allowed us to get Damien's POV as well as Ray's. Ray is always in his own head, and I'm not sure he truly SAW Damien. Toward the end, Ray finally gets it, but Damien remains a bit of an enigma.

I also wanted more from the ending. The last conversation the men have is lovely and real, but I kept waiting for those three little words that never came.

Overall, this is a sexy, low-drama read with two complex MCs and a true K9 hero.

Harley the dog for the win!
