ARC Review: The Captain's Pet by Samantha Cayto

Blurb:
When a distant planet’s ownership is in dispute, conquering aliens turn defiant human males into pampered sex slaves.

In a not-too-distant future, a lopsided war has led to aliens invading and occupying an Earth settlement. Wid is a young colonist who has been caught harassing the aliens. He and his friends are rounded up and sent to an alien warship patrolling the disputed space. His fate is to serve as a sex slave for the ship’s imposing captain. Wid, at first, fights against his enslavement, but soon learns that not only does he stand no chance against the much larger and stronger captain, he isn’t sure he even wants to.

Like all Travian males, Kell is bound by duty to defend his people. Having risen to the rank of captain, he nevertheless chafes against the boring and endless patrol of the space invaded by the humans. His misses his family and constantly guards against his scheming first officer. He sees his reward of a human sex slave as more of a nuisance. Yet the pretty, fair-haired human’s exotic allure is hard to resist. He finds far more pleasure in the use of his pet than he would like.

Kept naked and leashed, Wid’s days are filled with boredom, while his nights wrapped in Kell’s arms turn from fear into pleasure. Even as the humans plot their escape, Wid and Kell form a bond and their growing affection cannot be ignored. When tensions boil over among the aliens, Wid and his friends may be Kell and his crew’s only chance for survival.

Reader Advisory: This book contains sex scenes of both non-consensual and dubious consent, as well as scenes of violence, abuse and torture.

Dani's rating:

Pay attention to the reader advisory, which states: This book contains sex scenes of both non-consensual and dubious consent, as well as scenes of violence, abuse and torture.

I am not going to drop my rating due to the numerous rape scenes, because I knew exactly what I was getting into.

As sci-fi goes, this is moderately well developed. The humans had to leave Earth due to depleted resources (SHOCKER alert), but one of the planets they settle, which they refer to as "Seven," has already been claimed by an alien race.

This alien race, the Travians, is a matriarchal society. Women rule and lead; men fight. The Travians also look very much like humans, except they're much bigger and taller, and, as is fitting, have huge cocks. Surprise!

Wid is captured on Seven for mild rebellion against the Travians and is given to Kell, the captain of an alien ship, as Kell's pet slave (thus the title in case you haven't figured it out yet).

Kell doesn't really want a pet, but that doesn't stop him from fucking Wid again and again, first against Wid's will and later with gray-area consent.

Of course, at some point, Wid takes pleasure in the brutal fucking and craves it. Is it consent then or just Stockholm syndrome?

The sex is plentiful, hot, and rough in an utterly porny, depraved way; it's a hazy sci-fi naughty fantasy.

Obviously, if violence/rape are a trigger for you, DO NOT READ.

Wid and Kell develop a sort of emotional bond, but Kell has a wife/female mate on his home planet. He loves her and lusts after her and has children with her.

The Travian society is fine with males having male pets/lovers/consorts, so this isn't really a big deal.

Except it is. At least to me.

Because if I'm going to read through rape and violence, I want an emotional payout. Yes, Wid and Kell get closer, but Wid is still just a pet. He'll always be JUST A PET.

I was expecting a deeper connection, a mating maybe, but that didn't happen. The ending is a HFN, I suppose, but I wanted at once less and more out of this story.
