Board up the windows, push an old dresser against the door and load your shotgun. A zombie apocalypse is about to hit Wilde City, and if you want the best survival tips, six of Wilde City’s boys are here to help.Todd’s rating:
You’ll never want to exercise again as Eric Arvin and TJ Klune turn a gym full of hunks into a smorgasbord of terror in GHOUL’S GYM.
Wow, this one isn't going to be easy to review, without going completely to Spoiler City.
As this story began, I could see a lot of T.J. Klune coming through, but with less humor than I'd typically see in his other books.
Then something monumental happens and the story begins to take on a much more dark and sinister edge for our two heroes, Uly and Jake.
Talk about truly testing your love for another person, this story does that in epic proportions.
As with both "Wave Goodbye to Charlie" and "Woke Up in a Strange Place", Eric Arvin has a unique way of taking a story to an entirely unexpected, and not always pleasant, place. His influence in this book is the same.
This story was a nice mix of titillating gay glitter (I'm assuming from Klune) and gut-gnawing gore (I'm assuming from Arvin), with the gore (unfortunately) coming out as the clear winner in the end.
There is no HEA (at all) for boyfriends Uly and Jake in this story, which normally causes my rating of the book to plummet. Significantly. However, this story was so well done that it's still getting 4 stars.
Did my HEA-loving side like where the story ultimately led? A resounding "no" there.
Did I really enjoy the ride and actually empathize with a few of those "bite, tear, kill" zombies? A resounding "yes" on that one.
My heart truly went out to the Alphabet Twinks , especially A and C, and the way that they bonded with Jake.
And with gay zombies in a gay gym, I just knew that a zombie was gonna go all 'Lorena Bottit' and BITE OFF someone's dick, chomp chomp, and I was sure as shit right on that count. *cringe*
To me, this T.J. Klune and Eric Arvin collaboration definitely felt like the most well-rounded, romance-driven story in the Zombie Boyz anthology.
So 4 *yeah-God-yeah-no-no-fuck-no-AAAGHHH!!!* stars for this story's bizarre, zombified deliciousness.
