From the blurb:
Dr. Leo Rotherham is following his calling by working in rural Kenya for the charity Medics On Hand. While he expected a primitive way of life and limited medical supplies, what he doesn’t bargain on is falling for handsome village warrior, Malik.
Malik is well respected, knowledgeable and loyal to his tribe. He’s also beautiful, brave, modern and, much to Leo’s dismay, married—isn’t he?
No, it turns out Malik is as free as the animals that roam the African plains at night.
Soon the tension is building between the two men and Leo isn’t sure if he’s coming or going. Whenever he’s around Malik he can’t help but notice the reflected look of lust in his eyes and feel the longing sizzling between them.
Malik stands too close, not close enough. Forbidden attraction simmers between them and the need grows to dizzying heights. But dare they admit to each other what it is they want? And are they brave enough to act on their desires and be honest about their lust? One thing is for sure, a passion this big, this powerful, can’t be contained and it’s all going to explode in the most spectacular of ways.
This was a very, very strange read for me.
Dark Warrior was my first book by Lily Harlem, and I'm not sure I'd try her again. The book was a really odd mix.
On one hand, the writing style was very stiff and formal. There was a tense, careful feel with the writing that I didn't connect well with. However, on the other hand, the sex scenes were SUPER erotic. There is pages and pages of details that, I have to admit, worked for me on some level. For example, a masterbation scene went on for AGES, with very precise descriptions. You have to be into that sort of thing, I guess.
My real sticking point with the book was the race... issues. I don't read many "interracial" books billed as such, and so constantly pointing out that one guy was white and one was black was a bit odd for me to read.
"What do you think, white man?" Malik asked.
"Bring it on," Leo said, hoping he sounded braver than he felt.
Yes, tomorrow he would tempt Malik back to his room so he could get better acquainted with his dark dick.
"Tell me, is this how your white cock likes to be handled?" Malik asked, watching his own movements very carefully.
"You want to fuck it hard like I did to you and see what a white cock looks like in a black hole."
These types of lines (and there are dozens of them), made me feel vaguely uncomfortable.
In terms of medical content, that information seemed alright, superficially at least. However, it wasn't enough to get me really interested in the story. I still felt remote from the plot and not really connected to the characters.
While not a bad story, and with some hot moments, I don't think it was the right story for me.
