Spotlight: Trust The Focus by Megan Erickson

Today we shine the spotlight on Megan Erickson and

Trust The Focus

Megan has brought a special treat with her - a character interview with Landry! And there's a giveaway, too!

But first, some info about the book...

Blurb:

With his college graduation gown expertly pitched into the trash, Justin Akron is ready for the road trip he planned with his best friend Landry— and ready for one last summer of escape from his mother’s controlling grip. Climbing into the Winnebago his father left him, they set out across America in search of the sites his father had captured through the lens of his Nikon.

As an aspiring photographer, Justin can think of no better way to honor his father’s memory than to scatter his ashes at the sites he held sacred. And there’s no one Justin would rather share the experience with more than Landry.

But Justin knows he can’t escape forever. Eventually he’ll have to return home and join his mother’s Senate campaign. Nor can he escape the truth of who he is, and the fact that he’s in love with his out-and-proud travel companion.

Admitting what he wants could hurt his mother’s conservative political career. But with every click of his shutter and every sprinkle of ash, Justin can’t resist Landry’s pull. And when the truth comes into focus, neither is prepared for the secrets the other is hiding.

Excerpt:

The waitress handed us our plates and we found a corner booth. It was mid afternoon, after the lunch rush, so we had the place mostly to ourselves except for two older women in the far corner. The sandwich was amazing. Buttery toasted bread that crunched when I bit into it and ooey-gooey cheese with crispy bacon and ripe tomatoes. I must have moaned because when I looked up, Landry was staring at me.

“What?”

“Um, you okay there?”

“Huh?”

“Pretty sure you just took that sandwich’s virginity.”

I sputtered out a sip of coffee. “Lan!”

“What! That was a pretty intense moment you had over there.”

“Will you just eat?”

“My sandwich doesn’t want to do it now. My sandwich said your sandwich told her it hurts.”

“Oh my God, Lan.”

He picked up his sandwich and took a huge bite. Strings of glistening, browned onions dripped out the sides. He fluttered his eyes and moaned like this was a porn shoot.

“Lan, there are honest-to-God people in here. Cool it.”

He widened his eyes in mock innocence. “I’m sorry. I just had to show my sandwich a good time so she’d tell all her sandwich friends how amazing I was.”

Character Interview:

Trust the Focus is written from Justin’s POV, and we only hear from Landry in blog posts. So for those readers who want to hear more from Landry, here’s an interview with him!

So, what do you like most about Justin?

He doesn’t snore.

Come on, answer seriously.

(screws up his face thinking) I like that he’s never tried to make me change. He’s always accepted everything about me, even when I embarrass him in public over grilled cheese sandwiches.

What is your favorite sandwich?

Peanut butter and jelly with the crusts cut off

Do you still take road trips?

Yep, we just went to the beach and made that really tacky colored sand art.

What is one place you want to visit with Justin that you haven’t yet?

We’d like to go up into Canada, maybe take some selfies at Niagra Falls. I heard it’s gorgeous. And I want to go to a hockey game because I have an unsettling and confusing crush on Alex Ovechkin.

He doesn’t play for a Canadian team.

I know that! But I feel like I need to see hockey in Canada to get the full experience.

How are the calendars selling that you designed? Those go to charity, right?

(perks up and waves his hand around in excitement) Yes! It’s going so well. Just the other day, I made out a $2,500 check to the Trevor Project. Which I know maybe isn’t tons of money, but every little bit helps, right? We’re also working with… (He clamps his lips shut) Oh wait, I can’t tell you that. It’s a spoiler for FOCUS ON ME, Megan’s next book out in July. Ooops, sorry. But let’s just say, things are great.

You’re a tease, Landry.

(He winks.)

Back to Justin—

Oh good! My favorite subject!

Anyway, when did you realize you’d fallen for your best friend?

You know, I’m not really sure. We always had a really great connection but it wasn’t until high school that I started noticing how well he filled out his baseball pants, you know what I mean? So I was confused. Because I loved him as a person, and as a friend, and then to be sexually attracted to him as well caused all sorts of problems in my head.

But it’s sorted now.

(Laughs) Yeah, it sure took long enough but I guess it was all meant to happen the way it did.

One last question. Would you eat ketchup for a million dollars?

(shudders) Yeah, I’d do it for a million dollars and then Justin and I could retire at 25 and travel the country in an RV. So it’d be worth it.

About the author:

Megan worked as a journalist covering real-life dramas before she decided she liked writing her own endings better and switched to fiction.

She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, two kids and two cats. When she's not tapping away on her laptop, she's probably listening to the characters in her head who won't stop talking.

  8. Come on Lan. A million bucks for ketchup. You could probably play hard to get and get at least 2 million. We know how much it disgusts you.
