ARC Review: Hunted by D.B. Reynolds

From the blurb:
Power, it comes down to this... those who have it, those who want it. Revenge, the need for it is a fire in the soul, a goad for the unwise. Hunted, the fate of the foolish when they think to become the hunter.
The Lord of the Midwest is dead, and the powerful vampires of North America are gathering to choose his successor. The Vampire Council will be there to oversee the competition and to keep the violence to a bloody minimum, including Raphael, who will do whatever it takes to ensure the victor is a vampire he can trust. But someone is determined to stop Raphael and his mate, Cyn, from ever reaching Chicago, a hunter who may soon become... the hunted.

Heather's rating:

I KNOW these little novellas are filler but this is the first that FELT like filler.

I am a huge fan of Cyn and Raphael. They are one of my top paranormal couples, and I eat up their books like candy. However, this one didn't work for me as well as the others.

For one, I felt like 1/2 of the book was them having sex and it sort of got repetitive for me. I much rather read about scenes with more action, and I was more engaged during those parts of the story. While Cyn and Raphael have smoking hot chemistry, reading about the same couple having the same kind of sex in the shower or in bed over and over starts to feel a little mundane after some time.

I really enjoyed the introduction to Aden, who I can already tell is going to be a piece of work. I'm excited to see the woman who shows him a thing or two!

Book Review: Brandon Mills Vesus the V-Card (Prescott College 2) by Lisa Henry and J.A. Rock

Blurb:

Smart, shy Prescott sophomore Brandon Mills is working hard to overcome his troubled past and be normal. With the help of his friends Mark and Deacon, and his brothers at Phi Sigma Kappa, he’s slowly coming out of his shell. But when he accidentally drenches a freshman in orange soda, he faces something he’s not ready for: a boy crushing on him.

Alex Kekoa pledges Phi Sig because it has everything he wants: a house full of nerds who won’t tease him for being smart, a dog, and Brandon Mills. Brandon is just the type of guy Alex needs to help fulfill his college ambition: losing his virginity. Except Alex doesn’t know that Brandon can’t stand to touch or be touched.

When Alex and Brandon are drafted onto the Phi Sig Academic Challenge team, their mutual attraction grows. If there’s anyone who can help Brandon discover it feels good to touch and kiss, maybe it’s klutzy Alex with his cute glasses and his dinosaur obsession. But as the competition--and their relationship--heats up, Alex’s determination not to die a virgin clashes with Brandon’s vow of lifelong celibacy, forcing them to examine what’s truly important to each of them about love.

Dani's rating:

[Brandon] wanted to give Alex anything—everything—Alex needed to be happy. Private jokes, romantic evenings, a thousand million plastic dinosaurs.

Not a lot of steam on page (but lots of cuddling and kissing)

No endearments or proclamations of love (but tons of sweetness)

No HEA (but a very warm HFN)

And YET.

I loved this damn book.

Because.

ARC Review: Bones (Gothica 2), Anthology by Kim Fielding, Eli Easton, Jamie Fessenden, and BG Thomas

Blurb:

Vodou. Obeah. Santeria. These religions seem mysterious and dark to the uninitiated, but the truth is often very different. Still, while they hold the potential for great power, they can be dangerous to those who don’t take appropriate precautions. Interfering with the spirits is best left to those who know what they’re doing, for when the proper respect isn’t shown, trouble can follow. In these four novellas, steamy nights of possession and exotic ritual will trigger forbidden passion and love. You cannot hide your desires from the loa, or from the maddening spell of the drums. Four acclaimed m/m authors imagine homoerotic love under the spell of Voodoo.

Dani's rating:

This is a sinful, sensual treat for Halloween; like dark, bitter chocolate, it will melt on your tongue, making you crave more.

3.6 stars rounded up to 4; see the much more accurate individual story ratings/reviews below.

The Dance
Kim Fielding
~4.25~

#contemporary; grief/comfort; possession; sensual, nongraphic sex; spirits; mystery; tentative HEA

Kim Fielding never fails me. The Dance is a tightly woven tale of grief, lost souls, and the gray on this side of life.

Since his partner’s death, Bram has been going through the motions. It would be so much easier to disappear if someone would just stop trying to kill him. When the mysterious, hauntingly beautiful Daniel offers to help, Bram slams the door. But he doesn’t lose the key.

It turns out ritual and possession make for amazingly steamy play. Bram and Daniel create a tapestry of authentic emotions: desire, love, fear, HOPE. Bram comes to understand what he lost and what he wants.

Vudou practices are spun into the story; there is no telling, only showing, every detail measured and nuanced. The magic becomes a breathing thing.

Fileding's prose is perfection. I think I would have liked a longer resolution, but the promise of the lwa (spirits) was enough.
Life. Death. It’s all one thing, mon cher, all part of the dance.

ARC Review: Groom of Convenience by Vicktor Alexander

Blurb:

In an alternate universe, in the country of Angland, 1814, the gentry live lives of culture and class. It is a time of courtships, marriages of convenience, and titles, where scandal can ruin an entire family. Gender lines are blurred, and making a good match is of utmost importance. Children are born to men and women, which has led to the acceptance of same-sex marriages.

Lady Lucien Timothy Hawthorne is shocked and angry when he is betrothed against his will to Lord Heathcliff Eddington, III, the Duke of Pompinshire. While drowning his frustration at a popular gentleman's club, he meets "Robert," a gorgeous older man whom he sleeps with as "Timmy," regardless of the potential damage to his reputation.

After their liaison, Lucien corresponds with Robert via letters left at Remmington, and they decide to elope. Before they can get away, Lucien meets his betrothed, Heathcliff, who he is surprised to discover is also his beloved, Robert. Both men desire a marriage of the heart, but they find out that sometimes a marriage of convenience can turn into love under the right circumstances. But Lucien has a secret, and Tlondon isn't as safe as they once thought.

Dani's rating:

Vicktor Alexander has created a fictional Regency, set in Angland, where sexuality is more fluid and gender is defined not by external appearance but by whether or not one can sire or carry a child.

Anyone born with a uterus is a girl/woman, and anyone born with seed (but not necessarily a penis) and a sire mark on the forehead is a boy/man. There are thus male women and female men. Males can be ladies and duchesses, and females can be lords. A male woman is still referred to with masculine pronouns, and a female man is referred to with feminine pronouns.

Confused yet?

I was throughout most of the book (even though Alexander explains this in an author's note at the beginning). While I command Alexander for flipping our understanding of sexuality and gender, there were so many secondary characters in this book (dozens upon dozens), I couldn't keep track of them all, much less their anatomy/gender.

Plus, this world is not as equitable as it seems: Two people who have a uterus can't get married, and neither can two "sires."

Males (who are women) can get pregnant, so there is m-preg galore.

The writing was stellar, and the first part of the book was fun.

Book Review: The Mating of Michael by Eli Easton

The Mating of Michael (Sex in Seattle, #3)
From the blurb:

Everyone admires Michael Lamont for being a nurse, but his part-time work as a gay sex surrogate not only raises eyebrows, it's cost him relationships. Michael is small, beautiful, and dedicated to working with people who need him. But what he really wants is a love of his own. He spends most of his spare time reading science fiction, especially books written by his favorite author and long-time crush, the mysteriously reclusive J.C. Guise.
James Gallway’s life is slowly but inexorably sliding downhill. He wrote a best-selling science fiction novel at the tender age of eighteen, while bedridden with complications of polio. But by twenty-eight, he's lost his inspiration and his will to live. His sales from his J.C. Guise books have been in decline for years. Wheelchair bound, James has isolated himself, convinced he is unlovable. When he is forced to do a book signing and meets Michael Lamont, he can’t believe a guy who looks like Michael could be interested in a man like him.
Michael and James are made for each other. But they must let go of stubbornness to see that life finds a way and love has no limitations.

Heather's rating:

Hot, sexy, and emotional.... DAMN, Eli Easton just NAILED this one and she nailed it HARD!!

Just to set the stage, I started this book on a plane from Chicago to New York, surrounded on all sides by Orthodox Jews. And I read this in paperback. Pictured me huddled around my book so my uber-religious seat mates couldn't read about the scorching hot man-sex happening on page. And it was so freaking hot!

It isn't often that a book makes me actually cry. But this book! Gah! It was so in-your-face emotional! I felt so much for these characters: Empathy and compassion for Eli's patients, tender towards James, and so incredibly in love with Michael. I adored Michael. I found him inexplicably sexy, especially when he was doing his sex surrogacy stuff, and so sweet that it killed me.

ARC Review: Cockstrut (Peckers 2) by Jacques N. Hoff

Blurb:

Sebastian Grant, a world-renowned avian vet, is so sure bird shifters aren’t real that even when an unruly cockatoo named Louis ends up naked in his arms, it’s difficult for him to admit he’s not imagining it all. Sebastian has traveled all over the globe only to stumble upon the perfect man in his hometown of Chicago.

Louis may just be everything Sebastian has been looking for in a partner—funny, confident, sexy and genuine. But there’s one major problem: Louis is a captive in a gilded cage. With the help of Simon, his blue jay partner Jay and the expanding team of Undercover Peckers, Sebastian is about to find out he’s willing to do anything to make sure Louis is able to fly free and cock strut to his hearts content.

Dani's rating:

His pulsing pecker would just have to wait. He was going dancing!

Gah, this series has no business being this damn CUTE. And I don’t have another word for it.

Oh, fine, maybe I do:

Delightful
Endearing
Hilarious
FUN

Cockstrut is all kinds of delicious, fluffy goodness.

If you’ve read book one, you’ll remember the hot twink with the Mohawk whom Simon and Jay notice while they're out dancing. He’s one of the MCs in this novella, and his name is Louis (named after Louis Vuitton, cause that's just how he rolls).

Louis is content to live a pampered existence in his gilded cage with his “mom” Therese taking care of him until he meets serious avian vet and scientist, Sebastian.

And then suddenly the cage looks like a prison, and freedom beckons.

What's a bird to do? Devise a devious plan, of course.

This novella isn’t overly steamy, but Louis could really shake that tale, and the two short sexy scenes were spicy and made me want to trill (ha!) for joy.

ARC Review: A Time for Loving by Nico Jaye

A Time for Loving
From the blurb:

Jack and Christopher have made it through years of campaigning and the horrors of Waterloo together--side by side by day and, by night, in each other's arms. After the war is over, however, will the love shared between this batman and his officer survive when Christopher returns to the life of a gentleman?

Rosa's Rating:

Here's a favorite dream of mine:

Georgette Heyer, queen of the Regency romance, awakens one morning and decides that what her books really need is a little dude on dude action. Instead of writing a book about an Earl who falls in love with the governess who's the half-sister of a baronet, she writes a book about an Earl who thinks that governess's half-brother is totally haaawt.

Wouldn't that be awesome?

But Ms. Heyer has gone to that great London dance in the sky so it’s never going to happen. *mopey face* I’ll have to comfort myself with books like A Time for Loving.

It's got everything; muslin dresses, valets, mentions of the Battle of Waterloo, lords and ladies, waistcoats, Hessian boots and talk of the London Season. There's even a walk-on by a famous Regency-era poet.

You know what else it includes?

ARC Review: Starstruck by L.A. Witt

Starstruck (Bluewater Bay #1)From the blurb:

Hollywood is full of dirty secrets, but Carter refuses to be Levi’s.
Retired action star Levi Pritchard has made a quiet life for himself in the sleepy logging town of Bluewater Bay, Washington. But then Hollywood comes to film the wildly popular television series Wolf’s Landing, and Bluewater Bay isn’t so sleepy anymore. His retirement doesn’t stick, either, because he’s offered a part on the show—exactly the kind of complex role he’d always wanted, one that would prove him more than a glorified stuntman. The only catch? He has to stay in the closet—no matter how attractive he finds his co-star.
Carter Samuels is the critically-acclaimed male lead on Wolf’s Landing. And now, the man who inspired him to take up acting—and made him realize he’s gay—is joining the cast, and sparks fly between them instantly. But Carter is out and proud and determined to stay true to himself.
Remaining just friends is the only thing to do, as both the studio and Levi’s disapproving, dysfunctional family keep reminding them. Except their friendship deepens by the day, tempting them with what they can’t have but both desperately need.

Heather's rating:

I pretty much read anything L.A. Witt writes. She is one of my most read authors, and I have 15 of her stories under my belt. This book was another good one, though it won't be making any of favorites lists.

This book is all about the relationship building. The plot aspect is kind of minimal. There is very little action here, and not a ton of drama. It is a story about two guys getting to know one another and how their relationship changes over time.

Book Review – Most Beautiful Words, by Raine O’Tierney

From the blurb:

Twelve-year-old Autumn's world is shattered when her beloved Great-Pop, Tommy Johnson, suffers a stroke that leaves him comatose. With everyone around her resigning themselves to the inevitable, Autumn is the only one not willing to give up. She and Great-Pop have more secret stories to share with each other, after all. More stories about Roy McMillan—the great love of Tommy's life whom he lost fifty years ago. Autumn struggles to keep Great-Pop on this side of death's door. But how can she compete with the beautiful and mysterious Valley—a place of surreal magic where the sun never fully sets? Especially when there's someone familiar in the Valley who will do everything he can to keep Great-Pop from returning to her.

AnnaLund's rating:

I am shattered by this book, and so happy I got to read it.
The first half was thrilling, loving, mindblowing, and so gorgeously confusing!

Then all the pieces are slowly worked together into a whole tapestry of interwoven lives, all seen through the wild and amazing eyes of a young girl.

Absolutely mesmerizing, and smashing language to boot.

There is so much love in here that it almost flows off the pages, oh how I love to read about great-grandfathers who have made a difference. Here, storytelling has a way of taking wings and flying into your dreams at night. Here, fantasy becomes imagination, and then dreams happen, that go on to become reality. Or not.

Of course, you need to love family, and be the kind of reader who doesn’t get upset when she squeals in joy or gushes forth in amazing amounts of tears. Because there was plentiful of both.

This book is going to stay with me for a long time.
There is hope and emotions and happiness and sadness and bisexuality and love and understanding and… Great-Grand Fathers!
